Cathi Unsworth: Weirdo

Nu har jag läst ut Cathi Unsworths bok Weirdo. Eller ja, det var ett tag sedan jag läste ut den men har inte hunnit att recensera den förrän nu...

Handling: För tjugo år sedan dömdes den då 15-åriga Corrine Woodrow för mordet på en av sina klasskamrater. Nu visar DNA att någon annan verkar ha befunnit sig på mordplatsen. Privatdektektiven Sean Ward får i uppdrag av en advokat som försöker fria Corinne att åka till Norfolk för att utreda mordet och försöka ta reda på vad som egentligen hände för 20 år sedan. På plats möter Sean en småstad som döljer många hemligheter och där det verkar finnas de som inte vill att sanningen ska komma fram.

Jag tyckte den här boken var riktigt bra. En välskriven och bra deckare som inte blev förutsägbar. Boken höll mig i spänning ända till sista sidan. Boken utspelar sig i riktigt småstadsmiljö och jag gillar den mystiska spänningen som skapas av att mordet verkar ha anknytning till svart magi. Jag kan inte låta bli att gripas av Corrines tragiska livsöde. Helt klart en bok jag rekommenderar. 

Now I've read Cathi Unsworths Weirdo. I actually finshed reading the book a while ago but I haven't had time to review it before now. 

The book is about a murder that took place 20 years ago. The then 15 year old school girl Corrine Woodward was convicted for killing a classmate. Now new DNA shows that someone else was present at the murderscene. A lawyer that tries to clear Corrine hires the private detective Sean Ward to investigate the old murder and try to find out what really happend and how it was that was there with Corrine and the murder victime at the time of the murder. It soon becomes clear that Norfolk is a small town with lots of secrets and that some people doesn't want the truth to come out.

I really enjoyed this book. It's a well written crime novell where the story isn't forseeable. The book held my interest till the last page and was thrilling till the end. The book takes place in a real small town envirement and I like the mystic feeling around the fact that the murder looks like it could be connected to black magic and I can't help but be captivated by Corrines tragic life. I really recommend this book.

Privatutredaren Sean Ward åker därför till den lilla staden Ernemouth för att undersöka fallet. Till sin hälp har han den lokala tidningens chefredaktör Fracesca och tillsammans försöker de reda ut vad som egentligen hände.

Cathi Unsworth är författare, journalist och redaktör och bor och arbetar i London. Hon har tidigare skrivit både romaner och punk noir noveller, bland annat den kritikerrosade Pad Benny Blues. Hon deltar ofta i spoken word-arrangemang och har haft flera framträdanden där hennes texter ackompanjeras av musik och ljudeffekter.

This spring the book Weirdo by Cathi Unsworth comes out in Sweden. 

The action is set in the fictional Norfolk seaside resort of Ernemouth, and the story switches between events in the early 1980s and 2003. In the latter timeline, a former cop turned private detective, Sean Ward, is hired to look into a brutal murder that occurred two decades previously.

Corrine Woodrow, then a 15-year-old schoolgirl, was found guilty of the brutal murder of a classmate and has spent 20 years behind bars, but a recent reopening of the case has thrown up new DNA evidence suggesting that someone else was at least present at the crime scene, if not further implicated.

So throughout Weirdo we get a clever and intricate dovetailing of Ward's investigation into the murder with the events at the time leading up to it.
